Liner notes to the CD:

ARTIST PROFILE: Cantrell Maryott

A third-generation Arizonan and native Tucsonan, Cantrell Maryott is indeed an indigenous Sonoran Desert voice. She has been singing since the age of six in choirs, rock 'n' roll bands, folk and jazz ensembles, as well as vocalizing in the context of musical theater and modern dance. Cantrell has performed in the USA, South America, and Europe. Her many and varied recordings include Verve, a live CD of jazz standards with grand piano accompaniment.

ARTIST PROFILE: Will Clipman

A drummer since the age of three, Will has made his home in the Sonoran Desert for over a quarter of a century. His discography of over fifty recordings includes fifteen for Canyon Records, among which is the 2001 Grammy Finalist In A Distant Place. In addition to his work with Cantrell, Will records, performs, and tours regionally, nationally, and internationally with the R. Carlos Nakai Quartet & Trio, the William Eaton Ensemble, and the Conrads.

ABOUT THE MUSIC

Cantrell and Will describe their music as sonic synergy: a sound that emanates directly from the heart, and generates an energy greater than the sum of its parts. It could also be described as somatic synesthesia: a vibration sent directly into the body, causing a creative convergence of the senses. While it is global in scope, their music arises from and is deeply influenced by the unique landscape, weather, flora, fauna, and human culture of northern Sonora, the "Singing Desert" they call home. Originating from Cantrell's experimental "chanteling"—harmonizing vocally within acoustically charged spaces—the music has evolved into a highly intuitive and improvisational dialogue between the human voice in all its instrumental breadth and depth, and the drum in all its nonverbal communicative capability. Together, Cantrell and Will explore the infinitely imaginative realm that exists in the space between notes, the silence between words, the stillness between heartbeats. . . .
