Reliquary:

A container or shrine in which sacred relics are kept.

Sacred:

Highly valued and important.

Relic:

A trace of some past or outmoded practice, custom or belief.

I grew up walking in the muted colored hills and sandy arroyos of the desert. My collecting started then; with a child’s awe, old and misshapen parts, rusty and washed with an ancient patina, became mysterious treasures. Not only records of time, but a visual and tactile link to it. My life, my pockets filled. The various environments and cultures create their own unique artifacts; they tell a story of place. Each, a record of the peoples that discarded the element, as well as the environmental forces which shaped it. As I assemble these relics, my heart holds court. Shapes and colors balance themselves into a reliquary. Each piece is a connection between the doings of a people and the forces of the land, a sacred connection found in the most disjointed elements and brought together in harmony.
